The Human Collection
Through the idea of nature, I wanted to explore human nature and the common yet individual habit of collecting. I find it fascinating that everyone you come across has a collection of something important to them in some way. For this work, I gathered various collections, ranging from beads and jewelry to rocks and childhood toys, and arranged them together to expose them on cyanotype paper. Because cyanotypes don't show you the entire object, I wanted some of the original collected objects within the book to act as an added visual and interactive quality to the work.

A Longing For Air
A series of watercolor paintings, each dedicated to a piece of nature I long to be around and miss during my busy season when I cannot truly immerse myself. As the semester comes to a close I find myself getting lost in the feeling of sunlight and nature.

The Best
This text is allusive—you may not grasp it, I do not grasp it—slippery bitch. It is beyond sight, beyond mind, beyond clarity. If you choose to enter it, you will be with me, but you may leave me as the journey is an exercise in focus, a game of memory, and connect-the-dots if you will. It is a dropped chain, containing links and falling where it will: looping to places it has been and moving toward places it has not. May you be a nimble detangler. Only situational perspective allows legibility. Be aware of relative positions. You are warned: in all seriousness, take nothing too seriously.
This is the Masters of Fine Arts thesis text of Teddi K written in accompaniment to their graduation installation for the Mount Royal School of Art multidisciplinary program. Titled, above: record of distinction, window: no tongue at all, below: allusive touch, and installed in the Riggs and Leidy galleries of the Fred Lazarus IV Graduate building for the Grad Show 2024 at Maryland Institute College of Art from April 12-28, 2024.
The copy is type set in Lora eight point, and Lexend thin, semi-bold, and bold at ten or fourteen point and printed on 40lb glossy paper at the MICA Graduate Research Laboratory April, 2024.

Native Plants of Baltimore
For a community to thrive, it is imperative to have flora native to the community growing at all times. Native plants are critical to our environment, as they are naturally adapted to the local environment, are often more disease resistant than non-natives, creative scenic landscaping, and provide food and shelter for wildlife. This book is meant to be an artistic recreation of my research into native plants of Baltimore and the wider DMV area.

In human culture, the moon carries a dual longing and aspiration to break through confinement, embodying both negativity and positivity. For this book, I explored the relationship between the moon and human culture. With the cornflower and gold color chosen for printing and French stitching, it creates a wonderful experience when flipping.

microcosms
b. 2004 in Nagpur, India, Kiara Patel is an aspiring graphic designer, printmaker, and sound artist studying at Maryland Institute College of Art (BFA, 2026).
‘microcosms’ is an artists’ book investigating the long history of environmental injustice in three of Baltimore’s neighborhoods along the Patapsco River: Curtis Bay, Brooklyn, and Fairfield. This book is one of three editions and resulted from extensive research and on-site investigation, as well as discussions with residents, environmentalists, and many of Blue Water Baltimore’s members and archives. This semester-long project aims to highlight some critical issues within Baltimore’s institutions and systems that originated during Baltimore’s foundation and have had a huge impact on these neighborhoods.

Metamorphic
In this piece, I experimented with the theme of nature through the lens of spring and regeneration. I used the vibrant colors of risograph printing and imagery of flowers and bugs to symbolize springtime. Additionally, I included text describing the life cycles of plants and butterflies. These prints repeat throughout each signature in the book, symbolizing the cyclical nature of the processes. The binding is exposed to reveal the process behind making the book.

A Pocket Guide to Houseplants
As a graphic designer, I am used to making artwork that can be used every day. This booklet was made to function as both a piece of art and a reference when caring for new houseplants. It is small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag but large enough to fit nicely on a shelf. I used a simple color scheme to create cohesion between each of the illustrations and give the book a collective sense of unity.

It is one of three in the second edition and is part of a larger body of work made in collaboration with Elise Adamson, named "Captured Nature." This book was completed in Sarah Matthews' Artists' Books Class at MICA.
